Ms. Phillips' Class
Math & Science
I am so excited to work with all of you this year!
We are working on Probability and how likely something is to happen. Key vocabulary is: more likely, less likely, equally likely, impossible, and certain.
Fractions were our last topic. We have to identify fractions using the correct numerator and denominator. Students must also be able to look at a picture of 2 fractions and see which one is greater vs. less. The Division unit is now in review in the form of fact families with multiplication. Students will look at different ways to represent division problems including in a pictorial model and with repeated subtraction. The Multiplication unit will continue as well as the students learn to recognize related facts. Students still need to memorize all of their facts from 0x0 through 12x12. They must understand that the first # in the problem represents the # of groups and the second # represents what is in each group. To show mastery of this, your child should be able to show the repeated addition problem, the grouped picture, and the array for each multiplication problem.
For example: -5x6=30
-draw 5 groups with 6 in each group
-draw 5 rows with 6 columns
- In 3rd Grade students start the year studying Place Value. The new aspect in 3rd is that we look at place value up to the Hundred Thousands place. We will look at numbers in Standard Form- 264,589; Word/written Form- Two hundred sixty four thousand, five hundred eighty-nine; and Expanded Form/notation- 200,000+ 60,000+ 4,000+ 500+ 80+ 9. When working with numbers up to the thousands, we will also look at place value using Base 10 blocks. This means the 1000 cubes, 100 trays, 10 rods, and 1 units.
Addition and Subtraction Review, leading us into the Multiplication Unit. Look at how fast we are moving, as you chilren have not mastered the earlier work, but we are required to go on nonetheless. Please work with your child on addition and subtraction up to the hundreds place with regrouping and borrowing.

-In Science we are moving into the study of life cycles. We will include the study of plant and animals, and how their life cycles are similar. In class we are growing plants and will discuss animlas.
Matter has ended. At first will will learn that everything is Matter and group items into categories of solids, liquids, and gases. We will continue looking ar the characteristics of matter, such a magnetism and whether objects sink/float. Later in this unit we will notice how matter can change from one state to another, for example water. As a solid, water is ice, as a liquid it melts into water, then we can boil it and see it turn into water vapor as a steam. This will involve lots of hands-on investigations, which the students love.
